ORIGIN OF NAME:  According to the History Of Clan Stevenson at the website Electric Scotland, "The name is first recorded in Scotland in 1388 and means 'son of Steven'. The family originally farmed land in the parish of Neilston, Renfrewshire but they spawned a host of famous figures in history: Robert Stevenson (1772-1850) and his son Alan (1807-1865), David (1815-86), and Thomas (1818-87), father of Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-94), novelist, short story writer, and poet."

Robert STEVENSON was born about 1778 in Scotland, possibly Dalry, Ayrshire. He married Margaret CRAIG on 17 APR 1798 -1799 Stewarton Scotland.


He is listed on the 1841 census for Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland:

JAMES STEVENSON

James STEVENSON was born 8 FEB 1811 in Ayreshire, Scotland.  Christening: 10 FEB 1811 Stewarton. He died 24 APR 1879 in Specie Grove, Kendall County, Ill after being kicked by a horse.

He married Elizabeth COCHRAN on 1 APR 1851 in Dunlap or Stewarton, Ayr, Scotland. Elizabeth was the daughter of Alexander COCHRAN and Margaret ROBERTSON. She was born 16 APR 1821 in Dunlop Parish, Ayreshire, Scotland and died  5 APR 1880 in Specie Grove, Kendall Co.,Ill.

Both James and Elizabeth were originally buried in the Stevenson family plot in Oswego Cemetery in Oswego (KENDALL) Illinois.  They were moved after 1922 to Spring Lake Cemetery, Aurora, Illinois.

ELLEN (or ELIZA) JANE STEVENSON b: 31 MAY 1856 in Specie Grove (KENDALL) Illinois  Death: 20 MAR 1922 in St. Petersburg,FL Note: DEATH: died from tonsilitis and La_pippe (?) following gall bladder and gall stone trouble.

ROBERT "Robbie" J. STEVENSON  b: 21 JAN 1861 in Specie Grove (KENDALL) Illinois Death: 24 OCT 1880 in Western Kansas Note: DEATH: "died from Irish? Quist? Consumption while driving overland to Colorado when he died.


NOTE: Specie Grove in Kendall County Illinois is now a "Ghost Town"

Anna STEVENSON CHRISTIE died in Mitchell County Iowa about 1880.  Family legend says it was Pneumonia.  She was weakened by childbirth.

David CHRISTIE, b. about 1872 in Iowa. David CHRISTIE became a Contractor and was one of the builders of the Capitol Building in Dane County, WI

Stevenson Andrew CHRISTIE, b. 3/2/1874 in Otranto, Mitchell County, Iowa Married Ella DAILEY in SD and resided in Sauk Centre, Stearns County, MN

Edward CHRISTIE, b. about 1876 in Iowa. Ed CHRISTIE established a farm in Thief River Falls, MN.

Laurence CHRISTIE born about 1880 in Iowa.  This child was adopted by neighbors after Anna STEVENSON CHRISTIE's death.  He died in the 1960's in an Automobile accident in Texas or Missouri.  He was a race car driver and never married.
