Asa STANNARD was born February 10, 1827 in Rochester, Monroe County, New York, a son of John STANNARD and Phoebe NORRIS. Asa attended Starkey Seminary in Yates Co. NY in the early 1850's, where he began a journal that he kept up for many years. It is known in the family as "Grandpa's Diary" and is now being copied at the Town of Granby Historical Society for its historical content. Asa STANNARD married Cynthia E. COOK on 17 APR 1853. Cynthia COOK was the daughter of Caleb COOK and Lydia THOMSON. Cynthia COOK was born 12 AUG 1831 in Syracuse, Oswego County, New York and died 1909 in Madison County, Iowa. Asa STANNARD died 28 APR 1903 in Madison Co., IA . Both Asa STANNARD and Cynthia COOK STANNARD are buried at the Blair Chapel Cemetery, South Township, St. Charles, Madison County, Iowa.

"Asa Stannard was born in Monroe county, New York, February 10, 1827, and is a son of John STANNARD and Phoebe NORRIS..
His father was born in Vermont, and his mother, in New York. He remained in his native county until twenty-six years of age, with the exception of a few years passed in Gates county attending the Starkey Seminary; then went to Orange county and engaged in farming two years. In the spring of 1855, he came to Butler county, Iowa, and entered 160 acres of land on section 17, Shell Rock township. Here he lived for nine years, and then settled on section 16, where he now owns 80 acres.Mr. Stannard has held the offices of township assessor and trustee. He was married in 1853, to Miss Cynthia COOK, who is a native of Oswego county, New York. Eight children have been born to them, of whom seven are now living - Carlon Asa, Miriam C. , Calista E., Melissa F.. Ida Arvilla, Phares Cook and Lydia P."

Death of Carlon A. Stannard
Carlon A. Stannard, a former resident of Madison county, died Friday, July 11th, at a hospital in Yankton, South Dakota, at the age of 75 years. Mr. Stannard came to Madison county with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Asa Stannard, 27 years ago, and they located on a farm near Blair Chapel.
Four years ago, because of failing health, he went to Aberdeen, South Dakota, to make his home with his sisters. He leaves four sisters and a brother.
Rev. Paul Main Fowler conducted the funeral services at Blair Chapel, Tuesday afternoon, July 15, and burial was made in the Chapel cemetery. More details of his life may be found in the mortuary column.

Carlon A. Stannard
Carlon A., son of Asa and Cynthia Cook Stannard, was born in New York state, October 19, 1854, and passed away at Yankton, South Dakota, July 11, 1930, aged 75 years.
The family came to Butler county, Iowa, by ox team when Carlon was only 6 months old. His boyhood was spent on the farm there and after he grew to manhood he made his home with his father and mother. He never married and brought his father and mother to Madison county, Iowa, 27 years ago, to make their home on a farm near Blair Chapel. After a few years his parents passed away and he boarded with his neighbors and cared for the farm.
Because of failing health, four years ago he went to Aberdeen, South Dakota, to make his home with his sisters.
Carlon united with the Christian church early in life and remained an active and faithful member, ever taking delight in the Lord’s services. After coming to Madison county, he was for a number of years Sunday school superintendent at Blair Chapel and took an active part in their church work.
He had been in failing health since leaving the farm and for the past few weeks had been in the Yankton hospital.
He leaves five sisters: Mrs. Miriam C. Daily, of Shellrock; Mrs. Calista Soash of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; Mrs. Melissa Soash, of Brownsdale, Minnesota; Mrs. Lydia Bartlett and Mrs. Ida Tippy, of Aberdeen, South Dakota, and one brother, Phares Stannard, of Janesville.

He was born July 24, 1860 in Bristol, Kendall Co., IL, and died April 1948 in Sioux falls , South Dakota.

Funeral services for Phares Cook Stannard, who died Friday morning at his home of a heart ailment, were held Tuesday afternoon at the Kaiser Funeral home. The Rev. F.P. Pederson, pastor of the First Baptist church, officiated and burial was in Westpoint cemetery, Waverly Junction.
Mr. Stannard was born March 24, 1876 on a farm near Shell Rock, the youngest child of Asa and Cynthia Cook Stannard. He spent his entire life in the community engaged in farming. February 18, 1903, he was married to Myrtie Clements of Waverly Junction.
Survivors include his wife and a foster daughter, Mrs. Ben Ragsdale of Tripoli, two sisters, Mrs. Ida Tippery of Hillsboro, Ore., and Mrs. Melissa Soash, Woodward; and several nieces and nephews.
