James CHRISTIE was born 25 JUL 1807 in Leslie, Fife, Scotland to James CHRISTIE and Margaret MOODIE. He was a boot and shoemaker "Cobbler" in Leslie, Fife, Scotland (PIGOTT'S).

He married Margaret (Maggie) LUMSDEN on 4 November 1832. Margaret LUMSDEN was the daughter of William LUMSDEN and Janet LYALL. She was born 24 May 1817 in Scotland.

James CHRISTIE II died by 1860 in probably Leslie, Fife, Scotland. His widow, Margaret LUMSDEN CHRISTIE left Scotland for America about that time to be with her sister, Janet LUMSDEN BROWN, and her children who came to America before her. The CHRISTIE family settled first in Cook County and Kendall County Illinois.


Margaret "Maggie" LUMSDEN CHRISTIE died in Aurora IL on 24 April 1878. She is buried at the Scotch Cemetery in Cook County IL. Her headstone reads:

He came to America about 1850 .  James CHRISTIE II married Anna STEVENSON on 9 September 1857 in Kendall County, IL. Anna STEVENSON was the daughter of James STEVENSON and Elizabeth COCHRAN, both from Ayreshire, Scotland.

Anna STEVENSON CHRISTIE died by 1880. James CHRISTIE is on the 1880 Census as a widower with 7 children.  The smallest child Lawrence (?) (LARRY)  was adopted out to a neighbor after Anna's death.

James CHRISTIE married (2) Ellen BLACKMORE from England. He was helping a neighbor by picking up a relative at the train station who was arriving from England The relative was Ellen BLACKMORE. They were married shortly after.

James CHRISTIE and family moved from Iowa to Brown County South Dakota about 1881. James CHRISTIE was a pioneer of that area, helping establish the towns of Aberdeen and Frederick.

Stevenson Andrew CHRISTIE was born 2 March 1874 to Anna STEVENSON and James CHRISTIE in Otranto Station, Mitchell County, Iowa. His family moved to Brown County South Dakota about 1881.

He married Ella DAILEY on 31 March 1910 in Aberdeen, SD. Ella DAILEY was the daughter of Miriam Cynthia STANNARD and Isaac Newton DAILEY. She was born 21 DEC 1888 in Parkersburg, Butler County, Iowa.

Steven CHRISTIE and Ella DAILEY CHRISTIE lived in Brown County until 1913, when they moved to Sauk Centre, Stearns County, Minnesota.

RUBY ROSELLA CHRISTIE

 

1912-2006

Ruby Rosella CHRISTIE was born 1 September 1912 in Brown County, South Dakota to Stevenson CHRISTIE and Ella DAILEY. She was named after Ella DAILEY's brother, Ruben DAILEY, whose nickname was "RUBY".

Ruby CHRISTIE was a seamstress from a very young age and this was her occupation throughout her life.  She sewed for major department stores and privately for notable clients.  She was very proud to say that she sewed for the Sinclair LEWIS family in Sauk Centre, MN. 

She married Bert NEAL on 15 September 1930 in Stearns County, MN.  They were married for 56 years until his death in 1987.

In the 1940's Ruby and Bert moved to the Seattle, Washington State area, where they remained, settling in Renton, King County, WA.

Ruby passed away on Father's Day 2006 (June 18th) almost exactly one year after the death of her son, James Stevenson NEAL, who passed away on June 25, 2005.
